Greg Welch - Driven By the Rain

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Year: 1967
Label: Destino
Catalog Number: DS 331 ST

Style: Folk

Greg is a thoughtful guy who captures the era of independent coffee house guitar troubadours. He’s concerned about the children, and World War 3 and writes songs urging for peace. This album ends up being a very somber outing that feels distant, and lonely, but never cheesy.

His voice is nice, bright and upright. The cello and organ make an appearance, as well as other subtle instrumentation, but mostly it’s just Greg alone with his guitar.

The record seems to have been pressed in a very small quantity, and didn’t reach very far beyond a few listeners. It would be interesting to learn if he played much around the coffee houses, bars and clubs of Salt Lake City.

After listening to his sincere interest in the wellbeing of humanity, it’s sad to learn that Greg eventually died fighting in the Vietnam war.
