Arliene Nofchissey & Carnes Burson - Go My Son

Location: Provo, Utah
Year: 1960’s
Label: Blue Eagle Records
Catalog Number: BE-6850

Style: Folk, Rock

Arliene Nofchissey and Carnes Burson were two students at Brigham Young University in the mid-sixties. Originally from Arizona and Fort Duchesne, Utah. This hidden gem of an album is a magical musical moment filled with beautiful vocals and guitar that borders lightly on 60’s garage rock. Some traditional songs as well as modernized renditions.

The Indigenous people of America are believed by Latter Day Saints to be ancestors of the people found in the Book of Mormon, a religious record translated by Joseph Smith. Many Latter Day Saints will recognize this one from their families record collection. The back of the record recognizes the title track Go My Son as a true story of a Navajo war chief who once told his people that education is the Ladder to Success. Opinions on the relationship the LDS church has with Native Americans is somewhat controversial and for a good reason. Colonialism may be a part of this story but it’s hard not to recognize the beauty and sincerity found in the music here. Highly recommended.
